Feed Your Roots: The Roots join Global Inheritance to present composting initiative

So everyone is talking about the Grammy’s. Who won what, where they went afterward, and oh ya…what they were wearing. Well here’s one thing you may not have heard so much about… the Roots 4th Annual Grammy Jam Session.

This years Jam Session was a special one – and not just because the Roots were up for Best Rap Album. This year the Roots joined Global Inheritance to launch the Feed Your Roots campaign that will help educate and integrate composting in schools across the United States.

Global Inheritance, created in 2002, is a non-profit organization that is working to reinvent activism for today’s young people through creative expression, communication, and social change. The organization currently operates six programs, all helping spread their message through individual creativity - touching on everything from fashion to music.

The joint effort is an attempt to create environmental awareness throughout participating schools. Every school involved is challenged to use their creativity in designing an effective composting program while gaining participation from the students. The schools will have the opportunity to receive a custom designed compost bin created by artists such as Ryan Riss, Eric Otto, Jeremiah Garcia, Carlos Batts and Erik Siador.

The Roots Grammy Jam Sessions didn’t always carry such a powerful message... It seems it was almost started as a joke.

"Well it started off as the 'Anti Clive Davis Party' because five years ago we couldn't get invited, so we created our own party for 'nobodies' and now it's grown into this." stated the Roots drummer, ?uest Love.

Well, the party has definitely grown out of the “nobodies” stage. A number of recording artists and celebrities that attended the event signed a special Roots compost bin that will be auctioned off to raise funds in support of the campaign. Among the many crowd were Dave Chappelle, Jill Scott, Common, Will.i.am, Matisyahu, India Arie, and Talib Kweli.

United Nations Speak Through Hip Hop: Russell Simmons is inducted to the United

Known to many as the Godfather of Hip Hop, co-founder of the pioneering hip-hop label - Def Jam, and most importantly - an inspiration to anyone interested in music or business, Russell Simmons has recently taken on another role – this time he’s going global (not to say that hip-hop hasn’t). Recently there was an announcement made that the music and fashion mogul is set to be inducted as a Permanent Observer Missionary to the United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors program.

Simmons, along with also new inductee HSAN (Hip-Hop Summit Action Network) president/CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis, will join the European-based institution to help the much-needed and overlooked fight against hunger and famine in countries through out the world - and that’s just the half of it. The new position marks the beginning of what will become a permanent global crusade, addressing disease, war, and poverty – all through the voice of hip-hop…that’s right hip-hop.

"We're going to help save lives. We will not be silenced in the face of the awful fact that more than 40,000 people die every day from malnutrition and poverty," Simmons was quoted. "That is unacceptable to the Hip-Hop community."

Dr. Benjamin Chavis followed up, "Hip-Hop culture is global and, as we strive to take back responsibility, the life saving issues of ending poverty and malnutrition are most urgent," he said.

Simmons does not seem to be unrealistic regarding the challenges ahead. He appears dedicated to the issues and assures he will take an active role and continue to serve his purpose.

"Our job is to wake more people up to this reality," Chavis said. "Being a Goodwill Ambassador is not just ceremonial. We're rolling up our sleeves and look forward to working with the United Nations on these issues."

Did you know?
Russell Simmons sold his stake in Def Jam Music Group for an estimated $100 million to Universal Music Group in 1999. Also, Simmons (a Vegetarian) has spoken out against cruelty in factory farms and slaughterhouses, and has participated in PETA's campaign against Kentucky Fried Chicken.
