So everyone is talking about the Grammy’s. Who won what, where they went afterward, and oh ya…what they were wearing. Well here’s one thing you may not have heard so much about… the Roots 4th Annual Grammy Jam Session.
This years Jam Session was a special one – and not just because the Roots were up for Best Rap Album. This year the Roots joined Global Inheritance to launch the Feed Your Roots campaign that will help educate and integrate composting in schools across the United States.
Global Inheritance, created in 2002, is a non-profit organization that is working to reinvent activism for today’s young people through creative expression, communication, and social change. The organization currently operates six programs, all helping spread their message through individual creativity - touching on everything from fashion to music.
The joint effort is an attempt to create environmental awareness throughout participating schools. Every school involved is challenged to use their creativity in designing an effective composting program while gaining participation from the students. The schools will have the opportunity to receive a custom designed compost bin created by artists such as Ryan Riss, Eric Otto, Jeremiah Garcia, Carlos Batts and Erik Siador.
The Roots Grammy Jam Sessions didn’t always carry such a powerful message... It seems it was almost started as a joke.
"Well it started off as the 'Anti Clive Davis Party' because five years ago we couldn't get invited, so we created our own party for 'nobodies' and now it's grown into this." stated the Roots drummer, ?uest Love.
Well, the party has definitely grown out of the “nobodies” stage. A number of recording artists and celebrities that attended the event signed a special Roots compost bin that will be auctioned off to raise funds in support of the campaign. Among the many crowd were Dave Chappelle, Jill Scott, Common, Will.i.am, Matisyahu, India Arie, and Talib Kweli.
